Nail Wars! Ace aztec vs monochrome checks

nails_teaser 2

We’ve come over all graphic this week, with one eye-popping bright nail look inspired by Kendall Jenner, and a black-and-white ’60s check effect. But which will you be rocking this Friday night?

aztec

Jenny created this cool aztec look. She says: “To create Aztec nails, you have to have quite a lot of time on your hands! This look took me around 2 hours, and I felt like I rushed it a bit! It’s very tricky, but if you have the patience, the end result is really cool. First I painted my nails with a white base – I used Dolce & Gabbana Intense Nail Lacquer in True White. When this was fully dry, I painted stripes across the nails with Dior Vernis in Purple Mix, alternating with thick stripes and thin stripes. I just used the applicator from the bottle, but a special nail art brush would have been better to create thinner stripes (I definitely need to buy one of those!). When the purple stripes were dry, I then used NPW Nail Art Pens in black and pink to outline the stripes and draw zig-zag patterns and dots in-between the lines. Doing my left hand was fairly easy, but doing my right hand was really difficult! I made each nail different and there are hundreds of different patterns and colours you could try. A coat of clear polish sealed the look.”

Bad news, low-maintenance ladies! This monochrome look was pretty labour-intensive too, as you have to make sure the lines are really crisp and super-straight, so it doesn’t look like you’ve got footballs on your talons. To start, I painted my base, using Calvin Klein nail polish in Coal, which is a gorgeous molten black with a subtle hint of glitter that stops the dark shade from looking too goth. Then, using the pen end of my Wah Nails Models Own Nail Art Pen in White, to draw on the guides for the checks. When I’d done this on the nails of one hand, I then went back and filled them in using the brush end of the white pen. This didn’t always look super-sharp, so I went back (again) and touched up any white slip-ups with my Wah Nails Models Own Nail Art Pen in Black.
