Last night we bobbed down to London’s Adelphi Theatre to see new musical The Bodyguard – based on the 1992 Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner movie, which will forever be responsible for a nation warbling along to I Will Always Love You.
And, in short, we loved it.
The show follows the story of music star Rachel Marron (played by the super talented Heather Headley), and her new bodyguard, Frank Farmer (aka Lloyd Owen, off of Monarch Of The Glen), who is brought on board to protect the singer from a sinister stalker.
From the outset, the spectacular stagecraft had us gripped. The intricate set design meant the scene flipped seamlessly from on-stage performance to backstage conversations to dance studio and back to the dressing room. There were also a few edge-of-your seat moments as the stalker (played by Mark Letheren) became more and more deranged.
Featuring some of Whitney Houston’s best-loved tracks, we danced along to Queen Of The Night and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, then cried like a baby to Run To You and I Have Nothing. We got so emotional… (baby).
Headley made the role of Marron her own – and deftly took on the challenge of playing such an iconic role, bringing fun to the character and putting her own stamp on Houston’s musical repertoire.
Also, Headley + Farmer = CHEMISTRY. Yep, it got pretty hot in there…
