Raise a glass to Tequila

Tequila isn’t just for downing in shots. Some varieties are best sipped to appreciate the unique range of styles and flavours, says Rob Buckhaven.

Peppery Sauza Silver Tequila (£17.29, Sainsbury’s) has a smouldering pepper glow.

Blagger’s guide Tequila is produced from the distilled sap of the agave plant, not from the cactus as is often thought.

2 Creamy El Jimador Tequila Reposado (£17.09, Ocado.com) is all toffee and cream soda.

Blagger’s guide Traditional tequila bottles don’t contain “worms” – they were used as a marketing ploy in the US in the ’40s.

Honeyed Sierra Tequila Reposado (£15, Tesco) is a sweet honey and herb sipper.

Blagger’s guide The word “tequila” is thought to originate from a Mexican term meaning “the place of harvesting plants”.
