Daniel Galvin Jnr tends to the manes of some of our favourite A-listers. So when he invited our contributing picture editor Jenny Hodges, 34, to his salon to get the chop, it was an offer she couldn’t refuse…
Where The Daniel Galvin Junior Salon, Belgravia, London
Daniel, how did you convince Jenny to lop off her long locks?
I could see in Jenny’s eyes that she was ready for a change! Her hair was too long – it was dragging her down. She’s not tall and has a small face, so she was all hair! Taking it shorter has made her look taller and taken five years off her. Jenny looks like a power woman now – confident, gorgeous and radiant.
Do you ever get bored of doing hair?
Nope. If your hair doesn’t look good, then you don’t feel good, no matter what you’re wearing. If you’re in a £5,000 Chanel outfit and you’re having a bad hair day, you’ll feel terrible. With a good haircut, you’ll feel a million dollars, even in a Primark tracksuit.
Very true. So who does your hair?
Jennifer Manzi, who works for me. She does Spencer Matthews from Made In Chelsea’s hair, too. He said he’d never, ever cheat on her.
Are you a tricky customer?
I’m really bad – I always leave my hair until the last minute. I look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. I’m not the best advert for my salon…
Which celebs do you work with?
Holly Valance, Kelly Brook and Carol Vorderman all come to me. And Louis Walsh is coming in this afternoon. I do a subtle colour for him that reduces his grey by 25-50 per cent.
Is he going to be angry that you told us his secret?
No – he tells everyone himself!
Do you have any other silver foxes coming in to get their locks done?
Gary Lineker comes in with Danielle. They sit there and hold hands while they have their hair done – it’s so sweet.
Aww! Whose hair would you love to get your hands on?
Lady Gaga! She’s out there and she would be open to anything. I’d love to give her something really innovative.
Everyone confides in their hairdresser, so what’s the best bit of gossip you’ve heard over the years?
I can assure you that there isn’t much I haven’t heard, but it goes in one ear and out the other. It has to. I respect my clients and I’d never reveal their secrets. That’s my mantra. I don’t dish the dirt and I think that’s what my clients like about coming to me. Sorry!
You’re forgiven, we suppose. So you’re like a therapist?
It’s true. I don’t think most hairdressers get paid well enough, to be honest. You’re a counsellor as well as a crimper.
What’s your top secret for amazing hair?
We do an organic treatment at my salon with argan oil, wheat protein, vitamin C powder, and vitamins E and B. It takes all the product and pollution out of your hair, and makes it look like it’s been freshly coloured. Go and get yourself some argan oil, ladies.
We’re hitting the shops pronto!
