Retro waves
Kelly’s X Factor hairstylist, Charley McEwen, wanted to create ultra-glam hair
for week three. “I channelled the glitz of the red carpet and gave it a ’70s
feel,” he says. “It’s super-easy, which is key as Kelly’s schedule is
packed.”

Style X-planation
“I spritzed Kim Kimble styling spray (only available in the States) at the
roots of Kelly’s hair to give it a boost. But John Frieda Frizz-Ease Heat
Defeat Protective Styling Spray, £5.89 (1), will do the same
job. I then split the hair into large sections and wrapped each around the
Cloud Nine Wand, £119.95 (2), and pinned the curls up with grips
to keep their shape. Once the curls had cooled, I unpinned them, tipped
Kelly’s head upside down and loosened with my fingers. I finished with
Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray, £18.65 (3), to give a glossy
look under studio lights.”
- Charley’s top tip for extra volume: “Go easy on the hairspray! You must be
able to brush through your ’do. Instead of overloading on product,
tip your head upside down, spray lightly, and shake, shake, shake!”
Make like Kelly and load on leave-in conditioner to prevent styling damage
Classic chignon
“Tulisa’s vintage beaded dress in week one was really elegant, so I created a
hair look to match,” says Bryony Blake, hairstylist and member of Tulisa’s
Glam Squad (a team of make-up, hair and styling experts. We want one).
“She’s open to new ideas, but does like her hair to be neat. This
ballet-inspired bun was just right.”

Style X-planation
“I spritzed Tulisa’s hair with Bumble and Bumble Prep, £14.10 (4),
to give it extra grip and keep it in place. I then tonged the hair with
Babyliss Glamour Waves, £20 (5), to create volume at the roots
and stop her up-do looking flat. I parted Tulisa’s hair at the side and
swept it into a ponytail, then wrapped the pony around the base, pinning it
in place until it formed a bun. Finally, I added shine with Pantene Ice
Shine Hairspray, £2.99 (6), and a spritz of Tresemmé Freeze Hold
Hairspray, £1.86.” Once that’s on, the hair’s going nowhere.
- For a quick fix, Tulisa’s hairstylists love Batiste Dry Shampoo For Dark &
Deep Brown Hair, £3.99. It lifts hair between washes by removing
oil from the roots and stops it from looking lifeless.
Tulisa loves Beauty Works Deluxe Clip-In Extensions, from £89, for extra
