Dear Dr Hilary
As the party season approaches, I was wondering if there’s anything I can
do to boost my health. I often burn myself out in December, but I’m
determined to get through it without getting run down this year. Any tips?

Welcome to the “work hard, play hard” club. To maintain your stamina, you need
to keep up your general fitness. The best way to do this is by jogging,
skipping, swimming, cycling or visiting the gym regularly. Being sensible
when it comes to alcohol consumption will help too, as your body uses up
energy trying to process it, leaving you tired.
The day after any big night out, have caffeine in the mornings if you want a
lift, and avoid it in the evenings so it doesn’t disrupt your sleep. Getting
fresh air and daylight in the middle of the day is important too, so try to
leave your desk at lunchtime, and make sure you get at least two good
night’s sleep each week. Eat plenty of fruit and veg, and consider
taking supplements containing coenzyme Q10, B-group vitamins, garlic,
echinacea and zinc.
Dear Dr Hilary
I’m 31 and have been on the contraceptive pill Microgynon 30 for 10 years,
so I’m wondering if I should come off it. While I’ve never had any problems,
a decade seems like a long time to be on one pill. Should I be looking for
an alternative?
Tracy, by email
There is no need to come off the pill just because you have been on it for a
long time. If you are not a smoker, overweight, don’t have high blood
pressure or experience any side effects, then there is no reason to stop
using it. That said, it’s a good idea to review your choice of contraception
with your doctor to make sure you are using the best one for you. There are
alternatives, but you would need to consider whether they are as reliable and
convenient.
