Kiki de Beavoir solves all your modern day dilemmas. This week, how to greet people…

Dear Kiki

With Christmas approaching, is it ever OK to “re-gift” unwanted presents?
Sam,
Bexhill-on-Sea.

Re-wrapping and passing on some old tat is acceptable. In fact, it’s just
another form of that “recycling” crusties bang on about. I’m pretty sure
there’s a bottle of Babycham from 1986 that’s been passed between me and my
friends about 10 times – stick a bow on and it’s “vintage”, dahling.
Re-gifting is a great way of getting rid of those presents no-one in their
right mind would use or want. Peeling back the garish wrapping paper on a
two-for-one “smellies” gift sets strikes fear into my heart and dewberry
into my nasal cavities. That is, until I realise I can bestow it on someone
hateful. It’s why mothers-in-law were invented. The only exceptions are
diaries, underwear and the clap. Unless you’re feeling particularly
spiteful, of course.
