Dear Kiki
My boss has friend requested me on Facebook. Should I accept them, and what
will happen if I don’t?
Emily, by email
Well, you’re stuck between a rock and a faux pas. Accept, and your boss will
see you spend your working day “Liking” everything that deigns to call
itself “news” on your “feed”. Reject them and you might as well say: “We’re
not real friends, we just work together.” Doing nothing will suggest you’re
so technologically inept you can’t even keep up with Facebook, let alone run
a department. The only solution is to accept, then leave Facebook. Log on
occasionally to write career-friendly status updates such as: “9pm and still in
the office – I love my job!” and de-tag pictures in which you’re licking
tequila off Tim from IT. It might seem drastic, but it’s the only way to get
out of this alive. Besides, everyone’s on Twitter now.
