Dear Michelle

A promotion has come up at the law firm I work for. It sounds perfect for
me and is the step up that I’ve been desperate for, but it’s in Dubai.
I’m worried that getting it could end my year-long relationship with my
boyfriend. How will I know if I’ll like working in a new country with a new
team? Should I put my career first or stay put?

I’m afraid you’ll never know if something is for you until you give it a try.
You should start by learning all you can about Dubai and its culture before
making your decision. Then follow your heart and remember you can always
come home if it doesn’t work out. Even if you find it is not for you, future
employers will admire your courage for trying. As for your boyfriend, true
love can survive many obstacles. Don’t live life with regret – you have
earned this opportunity. Good luck.

Dear Michelle

I want to open a clothes boutique, but have no idea where to start. I work
in a top designer store so have good product knowledge and plenty of
customer experience, yet knowing where to start when it comes to ordering
stock and what to do from a business perspective is confusing. Any tips?

It’s a big step to go from working for someone to taking on your own business,
so think carefully. First things first, come up with a business plan. Be
realistic about the costs of running a business – rent, insurance etc. Visit
a local estate agent to get a better idea of rates and rents in your area.
Your local council may be able to help you raise money through grants and
loans, which can help with start-up costs. Work out how much of your own
money you can invest and set this aside to buy stock, because grants won’t
cover this.
