Cheryl Cole, Lady Gaga… the world’s gone loopy for lashes. Understated is just so out

Pow-wow plumage

One flutter of these feathers will catch the eye of every man in the bar. “OK,
they’re not exactly daywear, but for a glam night out – they’re divine,”
says Lisa Snowdon’s lashionista Ariane Poole.

Strong eye make-up lessens the impact, so stick to Collection 2000’s Extreme
24 Hour Felt Tip Liner (1), £2.99. If your budget doesn’t stretch to
£55 for Shu Uemura’s Fleur Ever lashes (above), Stargazer has great feather
copies for just £5 (2). Keep lips nude with GOSH’s Intense Lip
Colour in Pink Beige (3), £7.99.

Flirty flutter

For lashes that look as thick and foxy as (faux) fur, you need a pair that’s
full, fluffy and flirty. “The volume and texture make your eyes look huge,
even if they’re not,” says Ariane.

If you feel the look’s bold enough, skip shadow, but for superstar glitz, go
for metallic blue – Nars Okinawa Trio Eyeshadow (4) is a
splurge at £32, but the dreamy denim-inspired shades will last you a season
and beyond. We got fluttery with Mac’s 48 Lash pack, £8.50, but Eye Candy
Volumise Lashes, £4.49 (5), give a full effect for less.

Gilty pleasure

If diamonds and bling are so your thing, have a million-dollar flutter with a
pair of gold-leaf dazzlers. “Make a wow entrance at your Christmas party
with these show-stoppers,” says Ariane.

Crank up your carats by sweeping Barry M’s new Dazzle Dust in Buff (6),
£4.50, over your eyelid, plus a thick flick of a glittery gold liner (we
love Mua’s new Eyeliner Glitter in Shade 2 (7), £1). We used
Shu Uemura Gold Glam lashes, £55, but get blinging for less bucks with
Eylure’s glitter-dipped Girls Aloud Party Lashes (8), £5.95.

Five steps to faux like a pro

1 Apply your eye make-up first – it’s easier without your falsies in
the way.

2 Remove the lashes very gently from the packet and place them against
your eyelids to check the size. If they’re too long, snip a millimetre off.

3 Twirl each lash around a pencil to break the spine, or they’ll ping
off.

4 Place a fine line of glue along the lash spine. Wait for it to go
tacky.

5 Looking down into a mirror, place the lash on the top of your eye and
use a damp cotton bud to press it right down into the base of your lashes.
